Dryads are tree nymphs in Greek mythology who would normally enjoy very long lives. However, because they were such an integral part of their trees, if a tree died, the dryad associated with it died as well. Therefore, Dryads and the Greek gods punished any mortals who harmed trees without first propitiating the nymphs.
